Soft Tissue Modalities in Portland

When patients ask what to expect when we recommend soft tissue modalities as part of their treatment plan, we liken it broadly to deep tissue massage.

While it’s not a full-body massage, as some of us enjoy from time to time, we do target specific areas that need to be stretched or a muscle that needs extra attention to be released using various methods.

Benefits of Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation

With some patients, we’ll observe a need to increase the blood flow and oxygen to an area of their body. When your fascia tightens, it can build up toxins and restrict blood flow and oxygen. We may rely on instruments to assist in soft tissue manipulation in these cases.

Instrument assisted therapies use a variety of tools to break up more surface-level adhesions and promote blood flow to areas and allow normal motion. This can be a great treatment for tendon or fascia injuries and scarring.

Active Cupping at Move Better

At Move Better, we are hesitant to call our services just Cupping or Dynamic Cupping. Eastern medicine has used both methods as a tool that works with a full system of medicine. Where you perform cupping and how you perform cupping with other services is as important as using the tool itself. To respect this system of medicine, we prefer to call our services Active Cupping and we use this tool to perform western medicine with objective goals in mind. Active Cupping allow us to improve two major systems: motion and lymphatic drainage.

Body Tempering

Body tempering is a unique service provided at Move Better. It is our primary intervention for body work and strength preparation for all patients. We use the Body Tempering system in its true form and in our own way. Body Tempering was designed by Donnie Thompson (@thompsonfatpad), the first powerlifting athlete to achieve a 3000 pound total in a single meet. This means that the combined total of his squat, deadlift, and bench press equaled 3000 pounds. This was a big deal. A really really big deal. It’s such a big deal that after 9 years of new research and tools and people that total has only increased 14.8 pounds TOTAL! What this has highlighted for us is how brilliant Donnie Thompson is when it comes to preparation and rehabilitation. Donnie began using a stainless steel roll to reduce the likelihood of an abdominal hernia.

What came from it was a technique to prepare the body for strength training. Dr. Q first learned this technique from Donnie in 2014. Immediately, he knew that all other bodywork tools were rendered obsolete. It was the tool he had been looking for all along. He still owns the original unmachined steel rod (the eventually would become the Pain Pill) in his living room that he purchased on the spot at that seminar. Since that point in time, the strength training and athletic community have devoured Donnie’s teachings. From NFL to UFC, there is soon to be no single sport without this technique used by the most advanced athletes.

Promote Blood Flow, Healing, and Recovery

Regardless of the soft tissue technique used, the benefits are significant. Improved movement and healing stand out as the top two results, but it also helps normalize muscle groups that have been functioning with compromise, possibly causing pain and discomfort all over the body.

We re-teach your body how to stabilize itself in a healthy, physiologically and neurologically balanced way. From a neurological standpoint, you’ll stimulate the nervous system and decrease the pain in the area.

Take Your Treatment to the Next Level

Soft-tissue modalities are another valuable tool to add to your toolbox when fighting chronic pain. If you’re interested in exploring these modalities in complement to your chiropractic care plan, we are happy to help and will be able to assess whether they’ll be a good fit for your current health situation.
